Texas Based Fire Extinguisher Service & Training For The Workplace

4 things you NEED TO KNOW about Fire Extinguishers at your place of business

  1. It is required by the Texas State Fire Marshalls office to have a licensed 3rd party company inspect your extinguishers yearly.
  2. Your liability insurance requires you maintain and regularly check your fire extinguishers. In the event of a claim, you may be asked to provide such documentation.
  3. OSHA requires you to offer Fire Extinguisher training to new hires and annually thereafter.
  4. Cheap at home use fire extinguishers found online and at major retailers DO NOT meet OSHA standards for business use.

Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Programs

While this program is not intended to replace professional 3rd party annual inspections, TW Safety offers monthly fire extinguisher inspections to comply with OSHA Fire Extinguisher Regulations monthly inspections, the International Code Council, and your insurance company’s requirements by making sure:

  • You have enough fire extinguishers that are located properly, not blocked by anything and are easy to access during a fire.
  • That the locking pin in the fire extinguisher head is intact and the tamper seal is not broken.
  • There is no obvious physical damage, corrosion or leakage, and that the nozzle/hose is not clogged.
  • The pressure gauge is in the operable position.
  • The operating instructions on the nameplate are legible and facing outward.
  • The tag on the fire extinguisher was previously inspected and tagged.

Our technician will sign each fire extinguisher tag after each inspection.

Basic Fire Code & Common Fire Hazards

In the United States, fire code is to be adhered to by all businesses in order to ensure safety of its employees and patrons. This model code is developed by local and/or federal jurisdiction, and is enforced by fire prevention officers within municipal fire departments. Essentially, it contains specific rules prescribing minimum requirements to prevent fire and explosion hazards arising from storage, handling, or use of dangerous materials, or from other specific hazardous conditions. The fire code is aimed primarily at preventing fires, ensuring that necessary training and equipment will be readily available, and that the original design basis of the building, including the basic plan set out by the architect, is not compromised. The fire code also addresses inspection and maintenance requirements of various fire protection equipment in order to maintain optimal active fire protection and passive fire protection measures.

By understanding the top six fire hazards in the workplace, you can work to eliminate these risks and increase fire safety in your business. These fire hazards include:

  1. Blocked passageways and exit doors
  2. No illumination of exit signs
  3. Ignoring inspections and maintenance of fire extinguishers
  4. Ignoring annual inspection of fire alarms
  5. Ignoring smoke detector inspections and maintenance
  6. Open fire doors
